Hulk Smash!

So another Marvel movie fresh for the summer and alot of expectation to boot.  Does The Incredible Hulk make the mark?  You bet it does.  Edward Norton does great as Banner, Liv Tyler is an excellent opposite of the equation as Dr. Betty Ross.  Both had a chemistry that really worked, you never felt like either of them was unfamiliar with the emotional territory and depth of the story.  William Hurt plays the ever chasing Gen. “Thunderbolt” Ross  determined to get the gamma goodness for the sole use of the Government.  Alot of excellent views into the views of this character by dialogue and actions, I really can;t say anything off on this character.   Also, on a new kind of role for himself, Tim Roth gets his comic movie groove on.  Playing as special forces elite that gets a tangle with the greener side of Banner and wants the juice for himself.  I get the impression that Roth really enjoyed getting to play a character that gets to slide into the bad side and romp with it.

On a side note see if you can spot all the cameo appearances in this movie, it is freaking awesome, and yes Stan “the Man” Lee is in this one too.  I love trying to spot his moments in every Marvel movie.

All naysayers relax by the way, as the super emotional “daddy moments” from the previous movie are not anywhere in sight.  Not that the Ang Lee movie was bad, I actually liked it, but I think the mood of the last one was a bit to deep for the right pitch of this kind of movie.

Special effects are freaking sweet, with a ton of action and Hulk pretty much getting to let loose and throw around pretty much anything in his path.  A couple of people I heard from were saying the Hulk was too obviously a digital creation, but I really had no qualms with any of the CGI.  Let’s be honest here, you have a spectrum here to keep in mind.  On the one hand is a dude in a rubber suit painted green and on the other is what we have today, I think today is awesome.  Not that a painted bodybuilder is a bad thing, I loved the old series, but today we can do so much.  The Hulks body was fluid in animation, no unrealistic movement, the hair was excellent with environment reactions down really well (i.e wet hair, strong wind…) and the details were pretty freaking cool too, cuts and impacts on the Hulk were done with care, it’s the little things like seeing bullets bounce on his skin that impresses me about this CGI.

Oh and one thing in closing I have to comment on.  Thank You Marvel for tying the recent run of movies together, a cameo and tie-in at the end of the movie is perfect and raises the eyebrows about the mentioned “Avenger Initiative”.  I cannot wait.

Until next time, one true beliver Bear, signing off.
