Old Games are All Memory Games!

I am an original gamer kid - raised on the glories of Atari-era Frogger and Nintendo’s first Mario game. My memories of those games are so awesome, and I recall the satisfaction of beating the first Mario and Zelda games when I was but a wee gamer.

Recently inspired by these thoughts, I borrowed the Bear’s FinalFantasy III for the DS, which I’d never played before. And I have to ask - how did we live in these insane worlds where you need a Phoenix Down to revive? No auto-save feature? And no quest log?! Everytime I return to the game I have to jog my addled memory to remember what the heck I’m doing. I wonder if this will improve my memory… or if all these new-fangled hand-holding games have damaged me too much for that to happen? :)

Other than the fact that I must actually think to play this game, the mechanics are simple and the stylus is useable, but not utilized in a gimmicky or frustrating fashion. And, in the old RPG format, you really do have to talk to everyone in town to get a clear idea of what’s expected of you and where to find the next puzzle. Finally, I’m really enjoying my foray into the “jobs” of FFIII, although the Thief seems useless. The RedMage looks like a Pirate, but I have resisted the dangerous temptation to make all of them look that way.
