Saints Row 2 & the Recurrent Freezing Problems
In the spirit of Joining the Thug Life I fired up Saint’s Row 2 tonight, although I never played the first one and haven’t played GTA in years.
THE PROS
I customized my “gangster bitch” to be a cute Asian girl with red & pink pixie hair, and really enjoyed the high level of customization available in the character creation process. My brief foray into clothing, and previous nights observation as Bear pimped out his condo & cars show that THQ/Volition really went the extra mile to give you that kind of customization across the board. Kudos for that, good sirs.
The opening tutorial was quick and to the point, and I actually managed to get to the boat without dying, which was not what I was expecting. But then, it happened…
THE CON
Mid-way through the boat escape the game froze. This has occasionally happened with other games, such as Fable II during a really messy mob of Hobbes. But there wasn’t much going on, other than a police speed boat exploding in flames. I had to manually re-set the Xbox 360 and start the game over from the beginning.
The second playthrough I actually made it to the main land and into the first mission. Unfortunately, my driving skills are sub-par and I died a terrible death at the ends of several officers. Started the scene up again thinking that this time I would be way more thug-core and kill all the cops in the way before stealing a car. But the game froze in the middle of the courthouse.
THE RESULT
A little googling later, and it seems that the culprit is not our beloved Xbox, but is in fact Saints Row 2. Forums abound with complaints and flame-filled threads against the developers, while the Wikiepedia page even states that:
“Almost immediately after Saints Row 2 was released, complaints were made over issues concerning campaign freezing, multiplayer bugs and glitches. A patch is in development and will be released soon.”
So, on the bright sid,e, the all-knowing nanernets have promised a patch to fix the glitches. On the downside, we don’t know when that’ll be. I’m not too keen on buying a game that isn’t playable just yet, so I’m sure we’ll rent SR2 again after the patch comes out.
